Keeping Kosher with Kosher Wigs

Posted on August 8, 2011

Today on Chosen Mobile: kosher wigs for religious wives.  Now, you may well ask, what makes a wig “kosher”??  How can such a thing be?  You don’t eat wigs, after all.

And right you would be in so pointing that out, Mr. Rabbinovich!  However, the word kosher refers more broadly to whether the wig conforms to established Jewish norms.  Specifically, such wigs are rabbinically certified to not contain anything impure, such as being made from a pig somehow or, more to the point, hair shorn as a part of some pagan ceremony.

Don’t laugh.  It’s happened before.  Or, rather, it’s been alleged to have happened.  But a rabbinical investigation turned out nothing to substantiate the rumors, thank Hashem!
